A solid-state drive (SSD) is a data storage device using integrated circuit assemblies as memory to store the data. These are the next big thing for data storage, transfer and retrieval and a worthy competitor of the existing hard disk drives (HDD). The data retrieval and transfer time of SSD is much lower than those of HDD. SSD consumes almost one-third power of HDD, It doesn’t produce any sound (because of no moving parts), and is highly susceptible to environmental factors, resistant to shock and vibration.
It requires no special heat dissipation or temperature control mechanism. SSDs do not usually require any special cooling and can tolerate higher temperatures than HDDs.
It has higher reliability and lifetime (as it doesn’t contain any moving parts which can encounter mechanical failure) while HDDs have moving parts, and are subject to potential mechanical failures from the resulting wear and tear.
External drives do not require a separate power supply and can be powered through USB connections to the computer. This portable data storage device enables users to become more mobile, supplementing their notebook memory, and improving their overall efficiency.
